英语中补语用来说明宾语或主语所处的状态或正在进行的动作，因为英语中有些动词加专宾语后意思仍然不属完整，如：make(使...),ask(请)等等。

补语有主语补语和宾语补足语两种：
1、主语补语指在带宾语补足语的结构变成被动语态后，原来的宾补，如：
He was made to study hard what he was not good at."to study hard what he was not good at"就是主语he的主语补语。
2、宾补常用在一些固定的机构中，如在使感官动词后，宾补如是动词不带to或v+ingV+ed等；,其次，还可一用形容词，名词，数词介词短语等作宾补：
I madee my friend do the work(原形)
He has his hair cut once a month.（过去分词）
We heard someone sing/singing the song（原形／ing）
They have the horse running fast.(ing)
They elected Tom monitor.()名词
We put the books in order in the shelf.（介词短语）
They find the story interesting（形容词）
They felt the floor shaking.（现在分词／ing）
The man asked him to meet him at the gate.(不定式)
The soldier order the enemy not to move.（不定式）
